Lily's Fundraising To Defeat Meningitis

A former St Paul’s student, Lily Maxey, is devoting her time to raising funds for the Meningitis Research Foundation and to raising awareness of the disease, which is one of the major health risks for young adults in their first year at university. The charity she is raising money for has a goal to defeat meningitis and septicaemia by 2030.

Lily started fundraising in October 2019 and has already raised over £2000. Her fundraising activities have included bake sales, pub quizzes and the Anglesey Half Marathon. She has also swum the height of Machu Picchu, the ancient Inca citadel situated high in the Andes, as well as climbing its equivalent height in flights of stairs. Throughout February Lily ran 10k a day and is now looking forward to possibly her biggest adventure when she finally gets to climb Machu Picchu in September this year.

After leaving St Paul’s in 2018 Lily studied Psychology with Neuropsychology at Bangor University in North Wales. She graduated last year and has been in a graduate assistant audiologist job with the NHS and will move onto working for the South Central Ambulance Service as a 111 Health Advisor.

The tenacity and determination that drove Lily throughout school have been important factors in her further studies, fundraising and work life. She explained: “Since not receiving the results I had wished for on A-Level results day, I took this drive and ambition with me to University, to be awarded with a First Class Honours Degree. I honestly do not think I would have been able to achieve this without having the hard working mentality that was moulded into me at school.”

Speaking about school, Lily said: “Throughout my time at St Paul’s I was always supported academically and pastorally. In every subject you are pushed to your potential, making you thrive to do the best yourself. This made me an individual who strived to ask questions, look outside the box and not always just take the easy option.”

We wish Lily the very best of luck with her fundraising endeavours. If you would like to support her you can find her fundraising page at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/lily-maxey
