To mark Mental Health Awareness Week, which takes place from 10th to 16th May, St Paul’s is running a photography competition to encourage students to get outside and connect with the natural world around them.

Mrs Brea Dalkin, Teacher at St Paul’s Catholic School, explained: “The theme of this year’s awareness week is ‘Nature’ so we thought it would be the perfect opportunity for our students to explore the many green spaces we have in Milton Keynes and to take photos of places that they love, favourite plants and trees, or wildlife that they spot on their walks.”

According to the Mental Health Foundation, who host the Awareness Week, nature is so central to our psychological and emotional health, that it’s almost impossible to realise good mental health for all without a greater connection to the natural world.

During the pandemic, the Foundation’s research showed that going for walks outside was one of our top coping strategies and 45% of us reported being in green spaces had been vital for our mental health. Mrs Dalkin said: “Milton Keynes has over 6,000 acres of parks, meadows, river valleys, woodlands, lakes and open spaces so there are plenty of inspiring locations for students to connect with nature and take some great photos for our competition.”

Photos should be sent to Mrs Dalkin via itslearning and there is one entry per student. The closing date for entries is Friday 28th May. There will be prizes of £50, £30 and £20 Amazon vouchers for first, second and third place.

You can find out more about MK’s green spaces on The Parks Trust’s website  This independent charity cares for much of the parkland and green space in Milton Keynes and their website contains useful information and blogs about the parks, wildlife and nature-related activities.

During the Awareness Week there will also be posts on the student wellness page on itslearning, please encourage your children to look at the page and, of course, to take part in our photography competition.
