Public Understanding of Science Lecture

21st June 2018 from 7.30pm

Maureen Grant Room

Functional Coatings

In this lecture Professor Ivan P. Parkin, Professor of Materials Chemistry at University College London and Dean of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Faculty, looks at the formation of self cleaning surfaces.  These are surfaces that don't get dirty to ones that can be used for cleaning up oil spills- through oil-water separation.  The work focusses on superhydrophobic surfaces and shows how they can be made and used in a wide range of applications.

The lecture involves a number of demonstration including a superhydrophobic race track and the treatment of filter paper to make it completely un-wettable and the phenomena of water bouncing on highly water- repellent surfaces.  Superhydrophilic surfaces (water loving) will also be covered including how to make commercial self-cleaning glass.

This lecture is recommended for students Year 10-13 and their teachers and parents.

Doors open and refreshments are available from 7pm.  The lecture starts at 7.30pm in the Maureen Grant Room in K Block.

There is a dedicated car park for the Maureen Grant Room.  The K Block car park is located off Phoenix Drive.  If you are turning off the H7 instead of turning right at the mini roundabout (as you would for the main car park) you need to turn left and then first right onto Moorgate and follow the road around.  You will see signs for St Paul’s at the entrance of the K Block car park.  This car park is right next to the Maureen Grant Room.
